My Personal “Planner” Journey

Over the past ten months I’ve been on a personal journey to find the right planner/agenda for me. I have consistently used the Erin Condren 18 month Life Planner and the Evernote Moleskine 2016 Planner. After using both planners, I have decided, that despite its cuteness, I feel the Erin Condren planner is too much (both product and cost) and the Evernote Moleskin planner better fits my needs. Here’s why:

Erin Condren 18 Month Life Planner

Cost: $42 – $65 (depending on the version, for example I purchased the Rose Gold Limited Edition for $75)

Pros:

  • Includes weekly and monthly pages, which is a must have for me in either one product or a combination of two products (more on this in a bit).
  • Pages are printed on high quality paper. I feel as if the paper will last and makes the planner perfect for archiving.
  • Colorful and attention grabbing. This made “planning” more fun. I also decorated weeks with stickers, washi tape, glitter gel pens, etc., all of which made planning more enjoyable (in the beginning).
  • Customizable accessories, labels, stickers, etc., from third party sellers on Etsy and other web shops.
  • Excellent keepsake as a reminder of your year (or 18 months). This planner will probably last a “lifetime”.

Cons:

  • It is bulky, since it includes weekly and monthly pages. This planner will not fit in a small purse or bag. It will also add weight to book bags and laptop bags.
  • Calendar pages offer small or limited writing space (blocks). It does include a goal setting section on each monthly spread, but it has a small writing space as well.
  • Decorating with extras (washi tape, glitter pens, etc.) is time-consuming, but I felt as if decorating made the planner worth its purchase price. Decorating could also be overwhelming, especially if you search the web and try to keep up with the “Jones”.
  • Price.

Overall, the Erin Condren Life Planner was nice. Was it worth the its purchase price? Of course not! Cost is the biggest problem I have with this planner. For the price I paid, I suppose I was looking for a magic solution to all of my organization and scheduling problems, but I didn’t. The planner is excellent for keepsake purposes, but it offers no necessary functionality that cannot be found in any other weekly-monthly planner for a cheaper price. I’m glad I purchased the planner and I don’t regret giving it a try, but I have no plans of purchasing this planner again.

It is important to note that Eric Condren offers many accessories, such as a wellness journal and budget log. These accessories are sold separately, but may enhance your experience when using the Life Planner. I use online banking and have a Jawbone Up2, so I didn’t find much use for these items (although, from what I read it’s easier to keep yourself on a budget if you track purchases by using a handwritten log).

Evernote Moleskine 2016 Weekly Planner (links no longer available through Evernote or Moleskine)

Cost: $35

Pros:

  • Ability to upload weekly pages and note pages (using an iOS Apple device) to Evernote. Once your pages are in Evernote the text becomes searchable! While it’s not 100%, I’ve gotten it to recognize most of my writing by writing most words legibly and using a medium Sharpie PEN (not marker). Some users say they would rather just type meeting notes and keep an agenda in Evernote (using templates), but if you’re in education like me, meetings are often in places where I can’t have a laptop or iPad with keyboard (classrooms with student desks, auditoriums, cafeterias, etc.).
  • The size and compactness of the planner is awesome! Meeting locations limit what I can use to take notes and the size of this planner gives me the ability to take it anywhere. It can fit in a small bag or purse, and it doesn’t add extra weight to book bags or laptop bags.
  • The planner has planning pages and notes pages. I use the notes pages during meetings, doctors appointments, etc.
  • Smart stickers are also included. These stickers allow you to take a snap shot of a page with a sticker and it instantly uploads AND organizes that page in Evernote for you!
  • Pages are printed on quality paper, but be careful with liquid highlighters. I use the Moleskin pencil highlighters.

Cons:

  • The Evernote Weekly Planner lacks monthly calendar pages (*ugh*)! This is a must for me. To fix this I found a blank calendar only planner (Large Monthly Planner by MochiThings) that I plan on using next school year alongside the Evernote planner. You can also download monthly calendar pages from Moleskine, but they don’t have much writing space and have to be bound separately (or you can risk losing them by stuffing them inside the Evernote planner).
  • The traditional twelve month year format is also a downside for me, but I can overlook this for the planner’s other features.
  • The planner lacks tabs separating months for easy search and find. To fix this, I used Post-It brand tabs (see picture) to section off each month in the planner, which has worked great.
  • Learning to use the Evernote upload feature can be a pain, but once you find your “niche”, trust me, it’s life saving.
  • The planner is no longer available for purchase anywhere (that I could find). I am doubting there will be a 2017 version, so I may have to switch to different product or standard Moleskine weekly planner.

I love this planner and its multiple functions. I can keep a schedule, write meeting notes, and satisfy the techie in me with the Evernote upload capability. The price tag is not bad either. At $35 it is not overly expensive and is around the price of other quality planners/agendas. While, I am disappointed it does not include monthly pages, I am ok with this, since the planner is lightweight, and I have found a lightweight monthly companion.

The Large Monthly Planner by MochiThings (priced at $12.95, but the site has regular sales for as much as 30% off) does help to satisfy my papercrafting cravings, since I can decorate and customize each month using stickers, stamps, gel pens, etc. It is the perfect companion because it gives me a large monthly layout and writing space. The monthly planner also holds 13 months, making it great for a school year planner.

Final Thoughts

Like many “planner addicts” found over the web, I have come to understand that it may be difficult to find one product that meets my planning and scheduling needs. I have gotten over my fear of having to have at least two (doubtful and hopeful I won’t need more) planning products. Obviously, my life’s needs are different from yours, so I encourage you to take your own “planner journey”. Don’t be afraid to try multiple products at once. I think this method let me really compare the features of each planner to truly discover what I liked, loved, and could do without with each product (for example, small monthly calendar pages, no monthly calendar pages, etc.).

Focus on these words during your journey and you will be fine:  “Culture, travel, memory, imagination and personal identity” (the Moleskine company philosophy).

      My ipsy May ’14 Bag

Ok, while this month’s bag was definitely better than last month’s, I don’t feel ipsy has a feel for the type of products I use/want to try. Being a statistician, when I took the beauty survey, I was very discrete and tried not to choose multiple categories. That did not work in my favor (unless the company is trying to send me product to try outside of the products I already use/WILLING to try.

Like many other comments, the “water in a can” (Avene Thermal Spring Water) was a bit different, but since I sunburn easily I can ‘t wait to try it (love the sun no matter what #nativefloridian). I have oily skin, so I don’t think I’ll be using the Pur-lisse moisturizer 🙁 Can’t wait to try the Pacifica eye shadow, Hang Ten sunblock, and definitely the “Bloody Mary” Nailtini nail polish (it looks awesome!).

This is the third ipsy bag I’ve tried and each of them has contained eyeshadow. Needless to say, when I resubmitted the beauty quiz, I definitely unselected that category (if they send me one more eyeshadow compact …). I added more categories on the quiz in hopes of getting something different. They always win me over with a good nail polish color, but as usual (I’m such a sucker M.C.), I can’t wait to see what my #ipsy bag will contain next month. Really holding out for an awesome hair product and wished I could have tried to frizz free oil this month 🙁

My Trip to Myrtle Beach, SC

This beach is wonderful and quaint. It has the feel of a beach from the 1970s and 80s. That being said, Myrtle Beach (MB) needs a serious upgrade.

The beach was wonderful, not exactly the best beach (I was born and raised in Panama City, Fla.), but would recommend to friends to visit at least ONCE.

The local seafood restaurants, such as The Original Benjamin’s Seafood Buffet are awesome! My husband and I ate at a wonderful Chinese restaurant called E Noodles & Co.. The food at E Noodles was authentic and fresh. My husband had the Seafood Udon Noodle Soup and I had the combination of shrimp and chicken fried rice, both were excellently prepared and tasted absolutely delicious!

If you eat late, make sure to adhere to restaurant closing times. Several times we were told that since they closed at 9, the kitchen closes 45 to 60 minutes prior (Really??!!). This did NOT happen at the two restaurants mentioned above 🙂

Speaking of closing times … Maybe I’m spoiled, but during this time of year EVERY restaurant in Panama City stays open late to cater to tourists. Maybe Myrtle Beach doesn’t get a large college spring break crowd like Panama City, so late closing times may begin closer to the summer here.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Club Vacations Resort. It is walking distance from the beach, Waffle House, mini Golf and local restaurants (we did not eat at those). The unit was spacious and up-to-date (flat screen TVs with HD service in the 2 bed rooms and family room). The pool was nice and heated, but lacked a “kiddie” area. They also had an indoor heated pool. They offered a lot of onsite activities for very reasonable fees.

We were given a handicap accessible 2 bedroom unit, but were not told in advance we were being placed there (surprise!!!). The beds were hard and we did not get a good night’s sleep the entire 7 nights we stayed. The rest of the furniture was uncomfortable as well. Only one sofa and 2 chairs were in the family area of the unit. No one thought to clean the pollen off of the patio 🙁 We all suffer from allergies (good thing I brought along Allegra and Zyrtec). Needless to say we did not enjoy the patio balcony 🙁 If you stay here (I probably will not again) and bring toddlers make sure to use the night chain. My 2 year old could open the doors!

There was a wide range of shopping opportunities – malls, outlets, designer galleries, etc., were all available. I did see much in the arena of night clubs, but I’m sure they are here (right??).

I enjoyed my trip to Myrtle Beach, but I do not plan on visiting here again for a long time. Maybe the same 80s characters from the Radio Shack commercial should visit and ask for their beach back 😉

      K-9 Mail Android App Widget

Just a quick update about the K-9 Mail Android App. Make sure to use the widget that shows the number of new messages using a badge. I use the feature with the “unified inbox” so that I know the number of new messages for all of my accounts combined.

      K-9 Mail Android App

Ok, I’ll admit it. My Galaxy Note 3 isn’t perfect, but I’m still enjoying my Note 3 more than I did my iPhone. I even view the Note 3 on different terms than I did my iPhone 4s. The iPhone quickly became a necessity that I needed to communicate and occasionally surf the web or play with a few apps. The Note 3 is my “do-everything” companion. I love discovering new features and just plain using the phone even after a month of use (I believe my original iPhone 3G may have seen 1 week of this type of use, and the 4s… Ha!).

The previous being said, I will now admit the native email client on my Note 3 was a little less than desired, so I searched the internet for options. The solution I chose, K-9 Mail. This Android app is wonderful. It syncs my email instantaneously, offers color coded organization, and unlike many apps, a combined email box for all email accounts.

Other cool features of K-9 Mail (that I’ve discovered so far) are the customization of notifications using the LED light of the Note 3, manual selection of folders to auto sync, and it’s instantaneous sync abilities (the app notified me of new mail at the same time the GMail app did, and sometimes before!).

I highly recommend you try this app if you are feeling disappointed with the native Note 3 email client. The K-9 Mail app has become my new best friend (just don’t tell my dog Bernie 😉

My ipsy Glam Bag for March 2014

I received my March ipsy Glam bag filled with wonderful goodies 🙂

My first love in the bag was the Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer. This primer comes in a nice shade with a soft glimmer to it (not to shiny). It gives my facial skin a nice smoothing effect and helps to tone done a the tiny bit of redness I experience after a deep cleanse.

The next product I love that came in my bag was the Nicole by Opi nail polish (I’m an Opi polish junkie). The color is a nice spring blue called “On What Grounds”. I carry my own color to my nail salon, so this polish will be used (I carry my own polish because if I chip a nail or similar nail mishap I’ll have the color on hand for quick fixes. This is especially ideal for travel out of town.)

The Be a Bombshell eyeshadow is third on the list. It features darkly rich colors in its Bora Bora compact. The colors are different from my normal pallette, so I definitely have to find the right occasion to wear them..I’m thinking they could create an awesome look when I chaperone prom this year.

Last on my list, and probably won’t receive much wear, the Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie lipstick. Unfortunately, my skin tone is not ready for the “Get Ready” sample shade I received 🙁

Did you get an ipsy bag this month? What were your favorites?

Update to Jawbone Up Android App Now Supports Up 24 Band

On yesterday I got a pleasant surprise… The Aliph company finally updated the Android version of its Up app to support the Up24 band! This is great news since I own an Up24 band and I recently purchased a Galaxy Note 3. What is the Up24 band or even a standard Up band? It’s a product that falls in the same fitness accessory category and is similar to a FitBit and Nike Fuel band. The Up24 band, via a bluetooth connection, will sink your daily activity data with the app on your smartphone or tablet. Activities include step count (first and foremost), sleep tracking, and timed exercises (running, power walking, etc.). For more information about the Up24 band click here.

What do I like about the Up24 band versus similar products? THE Up24 band is stylish and lightweight.  It is barely noticeable. It carefully tracks sleep. The app allows you to log meals, so you can dump apps such as “Lose it!” Unlike many similar products, the app displays the number of steps you take and not “points”.

If you are in the market for an exercise “companion” and tracker, I would absolutely suggest you try the Up24 band. You will be motivated to meet your health goals!

      Current Hair Care Routine

My hair isn’t very porous, thus I leave nothing to chance. Sooooo… Here’s my current routine:

      • Co-wash every 3 days
        • I section and wash my hair with a co-wash cleanser such as Shea Moisture’s Co-wash Conditioner Cleanser or Eden’s All Natural CoWash. I also use conditioners such as Shea Moisture’s Curl & Shine Conditioner or Alaffia’s Everday Shea Moisturizing or Coconut Super Hydrating Conditioners.
        • After the wash I will deep condition if this is my second co-wash for the week see below in the “Shampoo” Wash section for more info about deep conditioning).
        • I follow with Shea Moisture’s Yucca & Baobab Thickening Growth Milk (hair) and olive and coconut oils (scalp and a little on hair)
        • Finally, I use Numa’s Honeysuckle Kiss Leave-in Conditioner
        • I usually twist-(out) using Camille Rose’s Almond Jai Twisting Butter (just a little for hold) or Numa’s Sweet Honey Loc & Define Pomade
      • “Shampoo” Wash every 2 weeks or when necessary
        • Pre-poo with olive and coconut oils (a lot on scalp and hair) and a conditioner such as Shea Moisture’s Curl & Shine Conditioner or Alaffia’s Everday Shea Moisturizing or Coconut Super Hydrating Conditioners. After I apply the oils and conditioner I put on a conditioning cap and sit under a cap dryer for 20-30 minutes.
        • I rinse my hair and wash with a natural/organic ingredient (mostly) shampoo. Shea Moisture and Alaffia are the brands I’m currently using. I also have a little bit of Taliah Waajid Clean and Curly Shampoo (gifted by a friend) left.
        • Depending upon the type of deep conditioning I plan on using, I may follow the shampoo with a standard conditioner.
        • A deep condition is completed after my wash. I currently use Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment or Anti-Breakage (I use a standard conditioner after my shampoo if I use this as a deep conditioner) Masques. I apply the product and sit under my cap dryer for another 20-30 minutes
        • After I rinse the deep conditioner, I massage my scalp with olive and coconut oils (I rub a small amount of the oils on my hair).
        • I seal everything in with  Numa’s Honeysuckle Kiss Leave-in Conditioner and style (see twist-(out) above).
      • Other things I believe help …
        • A good multivitamin. I take food/plant based vitamins because other vitamins, such as Centrum, make me nauseous 🙁 Currently I take Whole Foods‘ Women’s Food Based Multi
        • I also try to properly manage stress and exercise.

I feel like I’ve cheated on my “boyfriend” of 6 years …

Two weeks ago I made “the switch”. After six years of using an Apple  iPhone(s), I “upgraded” to a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I must say, I am impressed. The Note 3 obviously has more features than an iPhone:

      • Larger screen size
      • Multi app views (while this is restricted to certain apps, it is still very nice)
      • Customization features (I really love the widgets!)
      • LED indicator
      • Stylus (I love to write notes and doodle during meetings 🙂 )

The only problem I have with the Note 3 is the large/long learning curve. I’ll admit it has taken me the entire first two weeks that I’ve owned the phone to totally acclimate myself to it. That being said, if you purchase, make sure you have a few days to review all of the features, even simple ones such as making a phone call 😉

So, why did I switch? Simply said, over the past 6 years, the iPhone has remained “simple”. If you like “simple” then by all means stick with the iPhone.

Definitely no regrets in switching… Now if I can just decide whether to divorce my “husband” the iPad 😉

      The Good Hair Shop

I did it! I finally found the perfect salon and stylist to fit my hair care needs. I really love The Good Hair Shop and the stylist/owner Mrs. Kiyomi Rollins. She has wonderful styling products that are handmade as well. If you live in Atlanta (or visit) or if you want to try new wonderful hair care products visit the shop online for appointments or to create your order at: http://www.thegoodhairshop.com/
